The paper outlines the defining features of motorized pulleys, including hermetically sealed oil-filled construction, internal AC motor and gearbox design, heat dissipation through the pulley shell, and compatibility with VFD, soft-start, or across-the-line starting methods.

Applications are reviewed across both bulk material handling (mining, recycling, cement, aggregate, ports, underground conveyors) and food processing and unit handling (sanitary washdown systems, packaging, airport baggage handling, grocery checkout systems). The paper also outlines available options including lagging styles, backstops and brakes, stainless steel finishes, labyrinth seals, internal encoders, and electrical termination configurations.

Authored by the CEMA Conveyor Chain and Sprocket Section, the paper explains how chain selection criteria differ between power transmission and conveying applications, emphasizing the role of bearing pressure, pin-and-bushing wear, and roller tracking. It reviews common corrosion-resistant chain options—including nickel-plated, zinc-coated, austenitic stainless steel, and martensitic stainless steel chains—and compares their performance characteristics, temperature limits, chemical resistance, advantages, and limitations.

The document highlights important tradeoffs, such as reduced working loads and speed limitations for stainless steels compared to heat-treated carbon steel chains, and provides guidance on matching chain materials to environmental exposure, regulatory requirements (including food-handling considerations), and operational demands.

This paper is intended to support informed decision-making and encourages consultation with chain manufacturers for unique or demanding applications.

Prepared by the CEMA Conveyor Chain and Sprocket Section, this report covers sprockets used with a wide range of chain and belt types, including standard roller chain, agricultural chain, forged chain, cast chain, welded steel (mill and drag) chain, elevator chain, and plastic chain and belt systems. Each section explains common construction methods, materials, hub styles, and application considerations, supported by clear illustrations.

The report also includes a general technical note on chordal action, explaining its causes, effects on wear and vibration, and methods to minimize it through proper sprocket selection and system design. While not exhaustive, the document addresses the sprocket types most commonly encountered in typical industrial conveyor applications.
