CEMA SBP-003, Design and Application of Spill Guarding for Unit Handling Conveyors, provides recommended practices for selecting and applying guide rails, safety netting, and related accessories to help contain cartons and totes transported on unit handling conveyors.
Developed from the collective experience of CEMA’s Unit Handling Section, this publication addresses spill-guarding considerations for overhead conveyors, walkways, work areas, transfers, merges, catwalks, and platforms. It emphasizes the importance of application-specific risk assessments and considers factors such as load size, weight, stability, center of gravity, and the potential for shifting contents.
Topics include:
- Fixed and adjustable guide rails
- Safety-netting materials, height, mesh size, and support spacing
- CEMA’s recommended 2/3 guide-rail rule
- Loads with high or changing centers of gravity
- Human factors and designated travel pathways
- Spill-guarding configurations for single and multiple conveyor lines
- Catwalks, platforms, transfers, and merge areas
- Testing, inspection, and maintenance
The 2022 revision expands guidance concerning packages with off-center or changing centers of gravity, including loads containing liquids or loose materials.
This publication is advisory and is not a substitute for an application-specific risk assessment or guidance from qualified engineering and safety professionals.
