CEMA Technical Report 2019-01 – Conveyor Chain Sprocket Types and Definitions

Prepared by the CEMA Conveyor Chain and Sprocket Section, this report covers sprockets used with a wide range of chain and belt types, including standard roller chain, agricultural chain, forged chain, cast chain, welded steel (mill and drag) chain, elevator chain, and plastic chain and belt systems. Each section explains common construction methods, materials, hub styles, and application considerations, supported by clear illustrations.

The report also includes a general technical note on chordal action, explaining its causes, effects on wear and vibration, and methods to minimize it through proper sprocket selection and system design. While not exhaustive, the document addresses the sprocket types most commonly encountered in typical industrial conveyor applications.
